How does this work?

Am interested in comments, ideas re modeling, etc.

Can .jpg files be forwarded? Received?

Welcome to the forums [#welcome]

Yes.

Start by reading some of the threads to see how it typically goes.

You posted your first message and it’s here. (somehow it shows you have 0 posts though)

All you have to do to answer another post is hit the reply button.

As to posting pictures there is a website called photobucket. You can open a free account and load your pictures there. From there you can post links to your pics in the forums.

When you’re ready we’ll walk you through it.

Welcome! You can’t post images here, you can only link to them where a dedicated host server will hold their files for you in a gallery dedicated to your use. raiimages.com and photobucket are two popular sites. When you link here, you must use the [img] tags at the ends of the URL, but they should be provided for you in a menu under each image. Just copy and paste here, and your image will show.

I don’t understand your first question.

Welcome, come on in and stay a while.

Welcome to the forums.

You have figured out how to write a post, which is the important part. I still haven’t done photos, etc, but probably will someday.

When you write a new post asking a question, be specific in your title, that will draw people to it.

To look up and see if there has been a question asked before, go down the right hand column until you find Search our community. Even if the question has been answered befor, don’t be afraid to rephrase it and ask it your way if you don’t understand the answers that are there.

Right now my computer is doing strange things, so I’ll sign off before it completely dies.

Looking forward to your questions.

Have fun,

Richard

Welcome! [#welcome]

Your second question has been pretty well answered already. I’ll hit your first (since you confused Mr. Crandall, one of our esteemed moderators).

This is a forum, or public discussion site. Sometimes called a bulletin board. In most cases, that means you post a question or comment (or reply to one), and it’s up there for everyone else to see and comment on. And ridicule you and flame you and… OK, that does happen, but not too often. The folks here are a pretty civilized bunch. While you can start private conversations with members, you’re usually better off leaving it in public, because you’ll get better responses, or at least more of them.

My personal opinion is that you’ll get more mileage out of the boards if you recognize a couple of things up front. One, as someone said, try to be as specific as possible and include as much information as possible when you post. For example, if you say, “What should I do with my layout space?” you will get a bunch of responses, most of them asking you for more information. On the other hand, “I have a 20c x 20 area in my unfinished basement in which I want to build a HO scale switching layout.” you will get much better and more directed answers.

Also, keep in mind that there are few things in this hobby that can be described with the words “right”, “wrong”, “best”, or “worst” . Almost everything is a personal preference, and it’s your layout, so your preference rules. Many things are a tradeoff between time / effort and money, as a model kit vs. scratchbuilding.

Finally, heed the advice about searching before asking. You’ll ask a bette

WE just LOVE to eat up new members for dinner and spit them out! JUST JOKING.

I think you have answered your first question as you have managed successfully to post your first post. In answering further if you are asking" how does the forum work" or "what does it “do”- well here questions can be asked and answered, information can be shared, and all answers are usually based on personal experience, ideas or preferences. SOmetimes routine answers can be posted as there are a few “basics” to the hobby or “standards” that are generally accepted and followed.

Your second question will require you to ask more specific questions and provide more specific details to get good responses. A good start is outlined above. Asking a generic question of “what kind of layout should I build” WILL get responses asking for more info. ALWAYS remember to put in the details of what scale you are modeling, or are thinking of modeling, and info on size/space available for “project X”, and any other helpful hints such as which brands of products you are considering before you ask “which {or what} should I do/ buy”. WE need as many details about your situation, question and ponderings before an educated answer can be given. There are no “dumb questions” though often questions are repeatedly repeated amongst newcomers and the “old hands” get tired of answering them. Use the “search our community” feature on the right side margin and type in a keyword or two that best describes your question and you will get results that will lead you to threads on the subject that may answer your question. There is a pull down menu that offers you choices of areas of the forum segments here to search, or you can search the who
