Hello to all. This is the Brakeman here and I am the new kid on the block. I model the transition period from steam to diesel in ho scale, mostly the NYC RR. I’ve been watching this forum for weeks and finally decided to join. You folks are like an encyclopedia of model railroading. I’m looking forward to some enlightening conversation.

Howdy Brakeman!

Hello Brakeman!!

Welcome to the forums!![#welcome]

I am modeling the late transition era in HO too, and I also have a small mining track oval with spurs in HOn30 (HO narrow gauge on N sized track). It is (will be) located in the mountains above the HO track.

OK - we have to grill you some more! Do you have a layout, and if so is it a work in progress or complete? How big? Point to point or round and round? Are you DC or DCC? Sound? Operations oriented?

And you thought we would let you get away with a single paragraph!![swg][(-D]

Anyhow, you are under no obligation to reveal any more than you want to, and please do not hesitate to ask questions. One last thought - if you happen to get a negative or nasty response to one of your posts, ignore it!

Dave

oh yes, don’t forget to thank the gentlemen who help you. they put that one up there when I first joined a couple months ago.

Welcome to the “club”! I’ve been a member of the forums for years, and you’ll find all sorts of information here. You’ll also meet modelers at all levels of experience; from the novice to modelers extraordinaire. I hope you read the rules of the forums. Be courteous; treat others as you would want to be treated. And, first and foremost, enjoy the forum experience.

Welcome!

I model the transiton era just a little east of you in VT, Rutland, CV and a little B&M.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask that could help you out. There is a Search Community function in the right hand column that can get you to some previous threads on your question. However, sometimes the results of the search are overwhelming and it is a lot easier to ask the question in your own words.

You will get many answers to some questions. When you do, you have to filter them and try a few suggestions, see which works best for you. In such things as scenery there are many methods, they all work, but some better for you and even you may find different methods work better in different places on the layout. Don’t be afraid to experiment. It can always be changed if necessary.

Have fun,

Richard

and I am a LION! I model the New York City Transit Authority with the largest subway layout in North Dakota! LION is full of advice whither you want it or not.

Welcome, and

Welcome aboard. [#welcome]

I also model the Transition Period as I like both Steam and Diesels. I model the Northern Pacific Railway in the early 1950s.

I model 1963 in Bradford County PA, which is in the northeast part of the state. Towanda specifically.

My layout is an N scale railroad based roughly on the Lehigh Valley, called the Barclay, Towanda and Susquehanna. It is a short line railroad that has a greatly varied roster of locomotives. 1963 is technically this railroad’s transition era since it still rosters 4 steamers, though it has plans to retire them in a few weeks or even days.

As an example of what the roster includes, here’s BT&S #790. An FM H16-44

OK- Here goes, I have a layout that is a work in progress and has been for the last ten (10) yrs. It’s round and round with a double track main line allowing for two cab operation in opposite directions. I also put a turnout off of the main line that goes through town and back to the main line again. Then I have an industrial area where There are several sidings for the factories etc. The layout is shaped like an upside down U, both legs are about 7’ X 4’ with a 30" walk in. I’m running DC. I don’t have anything that’s even DCC ready. Don’t have any plans to convert either, it would be way too expensive for my budget. I have sound, but it comes from the power pac that I have, it can give me either steam or diesel but not both at the same time. The layout does not have any particular orientation, it’s strictly freelance. My wife and I just enjoy playing with our trains.

I was surprised too, I guess they knew that I was going to join the forum so Brakeman was saved for me. Actually “Brakeman” was my screen name on a now defunct model railroad forum.

Welcome Brakeman, if you are modeling the transition era, this is the place for you. Although I’m not “new” anymore, I just don’t have a lot of post. I have been watching this forum for years, and I’ve been an “on again-off again” subscriber to the MR magazine. Maybe now that I’m retired, I can do some “catch-up”. There are a lot of great people on here who share your time period, and we all share the love of model railroading, and just modeling in general.

If your not yet a subscriber, the MR magazine, I think, is geared more to the transition era modeler. Most of their “how-to” and “idea planners” are themed around the transition era. My modeling is themed more in the present day, or at least from the 90’s on. although I refuse to give up my WC locos, no matter what period you call it. I do have a few pictures I recently posted in the photo galleries showing some of my progress on my layout.

I quit rambling on ! Welcome!

Mike.

Welcome aboard.
