New Mexico Harvey House gets new owner
This is great news. I am confident the Affeldt’s can work their charm on the La Castaneda, as they did on the La Posada. The La Posada is a wonderful place to stay, and reasonably priced.
It’s a great place for foamers to sit on the grassy lawn, under a huge shade tree and watch the endless parade of BNSF traffic.
I am hoping both hotels continue to host Amtrak’s ‘Southwest Chief’ for many years to come.
This is yet another reason for New Mexico to join Kansas and Colorado in funding track upgrades for the ‘Southwest Chief’.
No question about it. La Posada is a must visit experience. I have stayed there 3 times over the last 7 years most recently 5 days last summer as part of my travels in the southwest during the summer. The Las Vegas place is a real gem and will be a must visit place when it is restored although the rail traffic will not be like the parade in front of La Posada.
Reminds me of the official Tim McGraw video “Everywhere”.
mr. and mrs. affeldt have the right “touch” to bring
la castaneda back – and, around them are artists, preservationists and folks who know how to rewire everything
from sconces to ancient elevators – i look forward not only
to watching their progress, but being an early guest. who
knows? it may soon be possible to go by rail to three great
harvey hotels: la casteneda, la posada and la fonda!!
Well I may be the only respondent to this post who can say “I have stayed in the Casteneda”. It was the spring of 1957 when I was with the Engineering Department of Santa Fe Railway. I had just been transferred to the New Mexico Division and its office building was adjacent to the Casteneda. There were rooms to rent and a coffee shop so I stayed there until my family could move to Las Vegas. NO, it was not operated by Fred Harvey in 1957. A local business was the operator.

The La Castaneda Hotel in Las Vegas, NM. Reminds me of the official Tim McGraw music video “Everywhere”. Look it up on YouTube. Great video.
Glad to see the La Castaneda finally get the restoration it deserves. The last time I seen the building it was starting to go to seed. This will be another reason to retain the Southwest Chief on it’s original route because it will be another destination in the city of Las Vegas, N.M.
My parents held their wedding reception at the La Castaneda. I have very little family left in Las Vegas and this hotel and the Chief, well they go together like my mom and dad did.
Even if not staying at LaPosada, go in, look around and maybe stay for some good food.
Great to see the old girl refurbished. I have visited a couple times in the past and was disappointed at her appearance and condition. I will make an effort to revisit after the rehab.
As a property owner near Las Vegas, I know its a town with lots of tourist potential and I hope La Castaneda will be just the catalyst needed to jump start the region. As a multiple time guest at La Posada, I know Affeldt will do a superb job and perhaps this will help in keeping the train calling at the already-refurbished depot adjacent to La Castaneda.

Correction: Allan Affeldt’s wife’s name is “Tina Mion”.
To second what others have said: La Posada in Winslow, AZ is a remarkable place to stay and its Turquoise Room restaurant is a wonderful place to dine.
Just 20 rooms after renovation? Can anybody elaborate on why so few rooms? Haven’t been to Winslow for years, maybe it doesn’t have many rooms either? Just curious. Hope it goes well in NM.
