New model railway hobbyist

Hi, my name is Paul I live in MIssion Beach North Queensland Australia. I am new to the hobby and I am enjoying the challenge of building a model railway. I have decided to build a table top layout HO scale. I have been researching and layout planning over the last few months and have now made a start. I have designed and made a lift up baseboard, constructed ramps and laid cork bed and I have begun to lay the track. It has been great to live in a time and age where there is so much information available via the internet to assist in the production of my model railway.

Paul, Welcome aboard.

Hi Paul, your right about the amount and ease of getting more information then you can use.Back when I started, nearest hobby shop was 60miles away, and you had to buy books to learn anything. And then you got one person’s view. Now you type in any subject, and get many ways to do many things,at 2oclock in the morning, in your underware.

Hang around here, and you will learn more then you need

PMorrie [#welcome] to MRR When you get a chance post some photos or your progress and feel free to ask questions and share ideas. We have a thread here called “Jeffries Diner” it is a sort of hang out place where good conversation about RR and just everyday things can be had. Come on in and the first [C] of Joe is on me. Hope to see you there.

Hello, and welcome.

.

Do you model a Austrailian prototype? Please post some progress pictures from time to time in the Weekend Photo Fun threads.

Still haven’t got my ideas in order as yet. But I do want a rural Queensland scene 1950 - 1970’s. As this is my first time at model railway I am leaning towards freelance so if I make mistakes no one needs to know. My wife is keen to create a backstory for the railway.

Hi, Paul. Welcome to the Forum. You’ve found a good resource here. Lots of folks who can answer questions, offer suggestions and their experience on various aspects of model railroading.

Tell us a bit more about what you are up to, if just to satisfy our curiosity. What size layout, what type track, DC or DCC, what era / and or loco types are of most interest.

If there is a club near you, suggest to check it out if only to take a look. I started in Jr High, and in H.S. joined a local club (as the only junior member). A club can be fun and a great resource.

Don’t hesistate to ask anything from general to very specific questions here…someone will jump in and help out.

Hi and thanks for the welcome, I am modelling in HO 100 streamline. I have started out small with a table top 2700 x 1060 (avaiable space) I am modelling a rural North Queensland scene - 1950 - 1970. I am using DCC , NCE power cab. I haven’t got everything worked out, it will probably be a freelance scene as this is my first attempt at model rail I need to give myself room to move especially as a newby. I haven’t really checked out any clubs, but I will have to check it out.

I never sit around in my underware! It’s naked or nothing!![+o(][(-D][(-D][(-D] Good thing I don’t have a web cam!

Paul!

G’day mate!!

Welcome to the forums and to the hobby!! [#welcome]

It sounds like you are making good progress. How about showing us some pictures?

Cheers!!

Dave

P.S. Just kidding about the naked thing!

They do some rather interesting things Down Under that in some case would seem familiar to North American modelers and railfans, and yet there are some things that would appear totally alien. Would love to see pictures of models. A friend of mine who moved from WA to the US sent me a copy of the operating manual for a fairly modern diesel loco - not sure how he got it, he’s an IT guy who was the DBA for one of the big mining companies and somehow came across this. There are lots of manuals for US locos available on line to read through, but this is the only physcial paper book operator’s manual I have - for an Australian loco. Built by GE though.
