New name for my RR

I guess I a lot of people modeling trains have a fictional name for threr railroad. I live in the South Central US and am modeling a fictional RR in a fictional area in south central US. I came up with a name, what do you think? South Central Rail Ways. I kinda like the name but the abbrevation sucks (SCRW), don’t you agree?

You could abreviate it differetly. SCRwy.

A little better, no?

What are you smoking for breakfast these days, Spacemouse?

What’s wrong with South Central Railroad? SCRR

I’ve got STD–Short Timers Disease. Vaction tomorrow for two weeks. [:D][:D][:D]

Sounds like a good name to me, The name of my fictional railroad is the Northern & Atlantic. I was going to name it the Northern lines, but that is the name of railway that excist. So I came up with Northern & Atlantic.

Why not just make Rail Ways into one word Railways. SCR. Of course, nothing says the reporting mark has to match the road name exactly. It could just be SC reguardless if it was a Railroad, Railway, or Rail Ways…

Ya, I can’t remember ever seeing a railroad writing it’s name as “rail way”. South Central Ry. (SCR) would work.

The only constructive critique I could give is it’s a little generic, could be anywhere (south-central US, south-central New England, etc.). If it’s a result of a recent merger of several older roads, a ‘generic’ name would make sense. If not, I would suggest trying to add something to make it more area specific…many roadnames had a direction in it, or ‘central’ but I’m not sure any had both?? Maybe try working in the name of a state, or city, or river that the road serves. “Oklahoma Southern” or “South Georgia” maybe?? “Central of Texas”?? “Central Mississippi Valley”??

Just a thought. [:)]

Okay, I see what you are getting at, I was thinking of South Central US, but I guess I need to do some more thinking (I really hate to do that type of thing). I appreciate all your comments. keep them comming. We’ll come up with something. Mike

Well if I was in your part of the country and wanted to keep it close to home I think I would definitely include “Ardmore” in the name somewhere.

Ardmore & South Central

Ardmore, Brazos & South Central

Our family homestead is further north: Stillwater, Perkins & South Central

Or include my favorite Texas place Perkins, Paluxy & South Central…

Texas, whar is so great about Ardmore? Something I don;t Know (Probley)

You could use SCRX.

In a reporting mark doesn’t the X at the end indicate a private owner? Like Sinclair - SDRX.

Just for the record, some railroads in North America do call themselves “railways”. My layout copies the operations (but not the scenic details) of a short line here in Ontario Canada - “The Barrie Collingwood Railway” - which moves freight between those two places and connects them both to the CP.

Choosing imaginary railroad and place names can be a fun way to personalize any layout. Town and industry names on my N scale layout, the Pershing Valley Line, are names of streets that I once lived on. Pershing Avenue, for example, is a very real street in New Rochelle, New York.

Yes. That’s why CSX reporting mark is CSXT.

How about

’ The Southern Comfort Express ’

or

’ The South Iron Rapture ’

or

’ The Swamp Runner ’

or

’ The Rusty Horse Express ’

Mostly it is just a pretty cool name to use in a Railroad name. The AT&SF practically built the town originally.

But from the other perspective it is the gateway to the Arbuckle Mountains, Turner Falls, Lake Murray, Arbuckle Wilderness (wild life preserve), Cedarvale Gardens, and Lake Texoma. For years (in the 20-30s) it was the resort/honeymoon capital of that part of the country. For me personally it is right on the exposed edge of one of the biggest outcroppings of Cretaceous shales and limestones in the US. This means it is good fossil hunting territory. However the last time I was there (two years ago) some idiot had plastered a golf course all over my favorite hunting place.

the name of my HO railroad is the Leelanauc County Railway, based on a 19.4 miles long branch of the manistee & northeastern rwy which ran from hatch’s crossing to end of line in lake leelanau village
