Mr. Packard: I think you are referring to Lovington, NM. That town is maybe 75 miles northeast of Loving. Lovington was served by a Missouri Pacific branch from Monahans, TX. It’s now operated by Texas-New Mexico. Loving is between Carlsbad, NM, and Pecos, TX on an old ATSF line now operated by Southwestern.
I’m just wondering if Southwestern is being given the boot.
So how does Southwest RR, the shortline operator of BNSF’s trackage in the area, fit into this?
Thank you private enterprise!
I think Union Pacific also goes there or used to.
Jarod, You’re correct.
Loving would be a much easier place to build a rail terminal as it is much flatter country. Its also has a rail line that I think is also served by Southwestern. That whole area is part of the Permian Basin and there are a lot of wells being drilled there on privately owned land, but almost none on federal lands.
Tankcars are already lined between lovington and hobbs what is the real story?
The line to Orla sulfur mine is lifted to Loving. The line to Pecos was lifted many years ago. The wye at Loving is still in place. Southwestern is handling quite a number of tank cars these days. The Carlsbad area (indeed the whole of SE New Mexico) is receiving a lot of attention due to the use of fracking in proven Permian Basin oil fields.
If it will help negate the need to build the keystone pipeline, I’m in favor of it!
It’ll be a great day when we no longer have to rely on foreign oil imports. And with this more Americans will have jobs. Maybe one day our economy will be good again, Much thanks to the railroads and companies and engineers who make all this possible.
