Hey everyone. I have been working hard on my table and i got most of my mountain done so I thought I would take some pictures for everyone to see how it is coming. I will be getting more pictures of the whole thing but I wanted to have some fun. The engine is the first engine I weathered and it is a Southern Pacific. Any comments or advice is appreciated And please tell me what you think! Thanks
Nice Job, The rocks turned out well, I have yet to get as far as scenery on my layout, still working on track (money is holding me back as always :P) on thing clean up the white plastr or what ever it is from the track, takes away from scenery.
Man that is a drity Engine, yet the glass is so clean you cannot see it![:D]
On the moutian boy I wised I live by you, that looks top notch. On the engine it self, it looks a little to weathered for my taste but I know nothing as being a new to this hobby. Have being in Auto Body Business and restoring cars as a hobby for 25 + years I like the look of new. Latter I may do some wearthing, but at this point I like my engines and rolling stock looking fresh.
But again, rest looks geat and hope I will be able to do 3/4 as well.
Lol. Yah I have to get windows for the engine! but anyways I still Have to get ballast for most of the tracks and Yes it is plaster.lol. I will take somemore pictures of the whole mountain so you can get a big picture of it. Is there anything else that i could work on to make it better?
Overall looks pretty good, only comment is on the tree (last pic) that looks like someone drilled a hole in the rock outcropping and stuck it in, add a little earth there and mabe some exposed roots so it looks like it belongs.
Ok Thanks i didn’t notice it. I made all the trees by hand and I still need to add some more scenery here and there. I am modeling the from about the mid '60s down. i will take a little of the wethering off of it. I don’t know a lot about te real railroads being i am only 16. Is there anything else that i could work on? thanks
Looking good! Something that I do with ALL of my rock scenery is to add a wash of India ink and alchohol to add depth. I also noticed something that use to plague me: plaster in the track. Before I start any screnic work around my track, I cover it with masking tape; enough to cover down to the base of the roadbed.
Lol. Thanks. I will normally use masking tape but i didn’t have any at the time. I will make sure to use some next time though. How did you get it off the tracks? Also I use water based paints and the alchohol will wash it off wont it? Thanks,
good pictures and nice weathering.was downtown today and i saw a sp engine 183 and boy did it ever need a wash job.about the dirtiest real engine i have ever seen.your ahead of me as im just starting scenry.post more pics when you can.terry…
As has been suggested a wash of india ink would add depth… what you’re aiming to do is to break up any large areas of single colour with the tiniest amount of other colour - in the case of ink washes usually with a darker colour - this “represents” small shadows created by directional light and dust/dirt that gets built up in the slight changes of level or cracks /depressions that go with those shadows. Very few surfaces in nature are smooth.
If you’re worried about disolving the paint you’ve already used you can do one of two things (or both)…
use the paint you’re elready using in very watered down form - artists have to layer paint on paint in pictures so thisi shouldn’t be a problem - make sure the 1st layer(s) have had time not just to go dry to the touch but harden/cure before adding anything on top… unless you want to do some blending… which you will only learn how to do by experiment - and I doubt you will ever be able to really explain what you do… 'cos it’s done by feel and the result you see happening as you do it.
