I remember those green mailboxes that are part of the HO Woodland Scenics street accessories. My recollection, from the 50s and 60s, is of green boxes that you could not deposit a letter into however – they were intended for the convenience of the mail carrier to drop off mail they picked up while they walked their routes. By the way the December 1 New Products showed the very same item. That’s OK – keep showing it until I get off my duff and go to the LHS and actually buy it!
Green Mail boxes were used into the late 50’s when the government began to run out of the Olive green surpluses that had built up during WW2.After appox the mid 50’s the RED,White and Blue began to appear, but the mail storage boxes remaind green until all the paint had been used up.Just a case of saving money.I remember because I grew up in the 1950’s and Early 60’s.
Pretty cool!
I remember the green storage boxes disappearing in the 60’s as letter carriers received motor vehicles to drive their routes. It seems this was about the same time the Zone Improvement Plan brought the five digit postal code into existence.
At some point, those green mailboxes were used for Air Mail only also if I recall. Definitely a time distinct item.
Green Boxes in New York City were “relay boxes”. It is where mail is stored for the carriers to pick up on their route in the high-rise apartment buildings. In the city we always deposit mail in the pick-up boxes and never in our mailboxes.
It appears that the Xuron Corp. Maxi-Shear flush cutter is facing the wrong direction in the photo above. Beginning modelers may be confused by this.
