This is my first building kit. The instructions say to install the windows as the first step. But my question is; if i do that how would i go about painting and weathering around them in the future? Or should that be done first?
I would rather not paint & weather it first, because i would like to try my hand at that on something smaller and meaningless.
When I built the Walthers Grain Elevator, I put the windows into a box with a mixture of Bradgon Powder. Shook it for a few minutes and had weathered windows. I then installed them before completing the structure.
When I built mine, I painted and did most of the weathering while the parts were still on the sprues. Then, I did a little touch-up when it was complete…
I would recomend putting them in either just before you put the roofs on or atleast that you wait till you have put a basecoat on the modell. The basecoat can be put on while it’s still on the sprues.
It is not hard to put the windows in place after the main structure is constructed as long as you have not glued on the roof sections.
I would also recommend that you consider painting the window frames before installation. The easiest and cleanest way to color the molded plastic frames is with a sharpie marker. I found it impossible to do a decent job with paint and a brush.
Due to a change in my paint scheme I have done both. I first used a black fine point Sharpie to draw the window panes in each section. And spray painted all the wall parts. Then I attached the windows and had to make a color scheme change, then I just used small pieces of paper or tape to cover the windows and that worked fine.
Also, here is a great thread on the New River Mining Co. kit that has a lot of great tips and photos shared by many, check it out!
Thanks for the suggestions and sharing the photo’s. The thread link that was posted is great with some really great looking mine photo’s in there, and it has givin me some fantastic ideas.
