New Rochelle N.Y. yard?

Ive been told there was a yard and turntable In New Rochelle N.Y. at one time? Anyone have any info or pictures they could share?

Around 1860-1870. First NYNH&H Grand Central suburban service, end point New Rochelle

1906 First main line NYNH&H electrification. Engine change at New Rochelle, but extended to Stamford within a year. Harlem River Bronxe terminal line remains steam. Ditto Hell Gate Bridge extension to Harold Tower, Long Island City. (1917?)

1922? Hell Gate Bridge electrification. New Rochelle - Willis Avenue 132st Street mu shuttle service, discontinued about 1937. Rush hour GCT - New Rochelle mu’s continue. Possibly turntable removed at this time/

Current: Still a few yard tracks in place. Perhaps also one or two GCT - New Rochelle locals during rush hours.

Thank you for that information, it seems that the yard and table at new rochelle wasn’t there for very long. I haven’t been able to find any photos of it poking around the various web sites.

Remember that the massive Sunnyside Yard is nearby so I would guess there would be little reason for anything there now, since it would be devoted to commuter train equipment.

Sunnyside yard? the one in Whiteplains?

No, Sunnyside yard is in Queens (I believe) and North White Plains has a very small multi track commuter train “storage yard” as I recall from the days when third rail switched to Diesel Electric for the trip further north up the Harlem line (I grew up around there and my wife is from White Plains and I rode the Harlem to work for a couple years in third rail territory).

Ok was poking around on google earth and found a turntable in Queens, anyone know if it is still there? I would guess its still there?

The Sunnyside yard is in Queens, NY. Took many pictures there. LIRR and PRR used it. LIRR uses it now.

heya igoldberg do you know if the turntable is still there or do you have any pictures you could post? I grew up in New Rochelle N.y. but moved away before i could really roam around and find these places.

Amtrack uses it. Conrail used it as well until the freight part of the yard was closed a few years ago. You can Sunnyside yard from the elevated Transit tracks and from for the streets as well. I know I used to see it from the express bus every evening coming into Queens from Manhattan until they canged the bus route.

Sunnyside yard used to be a bigger operation than it is now.
