Here are some shots from my layout, such as it is.
In this first one, I was seeing if I could make a decent ‘night shot’.
Same shot, but with the lights on.
Here I decided to turn the locos light on and “WOW”, did that make a difference!
Same subect, straight on shot.
This shot came out pretty good. The loco on the right is an E7, on the left is an E6.
Another ‘night’ shot. Yes, that’s a Union Pacific E6B you see there.
Here’s one of my industrial areas.
A different angle on the industrial area. That’s a GP30 lashed up to the UP E6B.
Birds eye view of the industrial area. The black cylinders on the left are something that can be found in about every rural backyard in the US. Septic tanks.
A look down the spur going into the left side of the industrial area. That’s an EMD SW1200 you see there.
Good shots Jeffery, the headlights do make a difference , night shots are tough on a layout. What did you use for the backdrop , the clouds are nice.! Busy little town there.
The backdrop is one I made from sheets of poster paper painted Nimble Blue. The town scene is one that I printed out on 8.5 x 11 plain paper and pieced together then glued to the poster paper backdrop with a thin film of white glue. The clouds are hand painted.
Very nice presentation, Jeffrey. You must have had a blast doing all that, thinking about it, how to do it, and then putting it all into place. Good job! The town looks very realistic, in scale, and the perspective works. Congratulations.
Thank you, Crandell. I’m trying to build this layout the way I used to build them around twenty years ago. Of course being disabled makes it a real challenge! But I am making progress, slowly.
I am acutely aware of your limitations, and keep that in mind whenever I read your posts, Jeffrey. I am sure that the others are aware of your circumstances, and I hope I speak for them when I say that it is a triumph of the human spirit, if there ever was such a thing, to know your accomplishments, A, and B, that you are happy enough and proud enough to post them for our enjoyment. [:D]
I am young, still, but there will come a time, perhaps when I am 85 (I should be so lucky), when I may say to myself, “This is what it was like for Jeffrey.” Then, I shall marvel even more. [:)]
Good pics Jeffrey, I don’t guess I have seen very many pics of your layout. Like some of the others, I am impressed with the background. Keep it up. Mike
WOW! Really NICE photos–especially the night shots–, and like everyone else, I’m crazy about your backdrops. I’m just coming into 1st-generation diesels, and I really like that E-6.
Couple of questions, both of them stupid, but here goes:
First, how do you “light” a night shot? Obviously there has to be some light, or it would just be a black picture. Is it ambient light through a window, or is there a light elsewhere in the room? Do you have to adjust the camera to compensate for the color? (OK, that was three questions but let’s just pretend it was only one.)
Second, I love the lights in the tower. What do you use for building lighting?
The little bit of light in the ‘night’ shots came from a small fluorescent light in the kitchen and was just enough for the camera to work. On the building lighting I use small Christmas lights. I wire two bulbs together in series and place them inside the structure and wire it into a 5 volt power source, in this case, an old AT computer power supply.
