New Site - Comments, Questions and (hopefully) Answers

Since the “New Trains.com” thread is locked, I’ll ask this here, and invite others to share wisdom.

At work, my computer has IE6, and it’s not my decision to upgrade.

At home, I’ve still got IE6 because IE7 caused problems when it first came out, and I never bothered to upgrade. Besides, explaining new stuff to my wife is very time-consuming, and the computer is much too close to the train room to get away.

So, will there be a problem with IE6? Are their features of IE7 that are being exploited on the new site which will be non-functional in IE6?

And, as a courtesy for our Apple friends - will stuff work on a Mac?

I look forward to the upgrades, but as many others will I’m sure, I have some questions.

I’m running IE8. Any issues there?

Also, my current login Email address is not an address I use any more. I’ve changed the links in my profile so that when someone wants to click the Email button, it goes to the right place, but I still have to login using the old Email address. Can that be fixed? Should I just sign up as a new member after the upgrade to change that?

I’ll look forward to your answers, and I’ll see you on the other side!

My Internet Explorer is IE6 but I hardly ever use it. I use Firefox 3.0 almost exclusively.

I use Firefox 3.0.0.3 with Firefox Flash Blocker to stop those Flash adds. Much better browser and it is a free download, plus you can still use IE if you like to.

I use IE8 because thats what my work needs me to use.

I’m on an iMac using Safari. I hope that this is not my last post!!!

Half the stuff doesn’t work with a Mac NOW, so I won’t surprised if things don’t work with the new site. If it proves too difficult to use the new site with Safari, then I’ll cut my losses and go elsewhere, because I’ll be buggered if I’m going to change web browsers just to use one forum.

Cheers,

Mark.

I am just trying to figure out how I am going to cope with the downtime while the site is being upgraded. I guess if it is just a few minutes, I’ll be OK, but I am worried about withdrawl if it takes any extended period of time–say 10-15 minutes [:D] Oh well, I do still have some remnants of my Xanax prescription from earlier this year…

Seriously you should not have any problems with IE6 unless the new site does something fairly exotic. There are still a bunch of users out there with IE6 and most technologies still put significant development effort into supporting that browser lest they invoke the wrath of a lot of unhappy users. What new site?

edit- Can we assume that all the info/messages currently here will still be available?

I haven’t used Insecure Exploder for my browser unless I have to since I discovered Firefox.

Thanks for the link. I’m on a Mac so I hope FireFox 2.0 will work for me.

Mr. Beasley,

I had to hold off installing IE 7 because a necessary software program I was using wasn’t compatible with it. After the software was upgraded for IE 7 I downloaded it and have experienced no problems. The bugs must have been worked out by then. I don’t think the Mrs. will have many questions as it is very similar to it’s predessor and it is supposed to provide greater security. It’s certainly not like changing to Vista. Now that would take up your train time. I can sympathize with your concerns as my wife and I usually get into an argument when she asks for computer help. Maybe I’m not a good teacher.

Looks like I’m sending my last post. Al least my last one from home…

What doesn’t work on a mac? I have no problems with the current site on my machine, running Safari and Firefox.

I have Firefox and never use it…Why should I when I have a good IE7 and never had problems?

Hi guys,

I’d recommend coming to the new forum tomorrow and testing it with your current configuration. If it works, great. If not, try the downloads mentioned (if that’s an option to you).

Based on our experience from upgrading forums on some of our other sites (Astronomy.com, ScaleAutoMag.com) we know that users who are using IE7 or FireFox 2 or higher experience the least number of problems.

Does that mean that if you’re using something less than those that you won’t be able to use the forums at all? Probably not… you just might not be able to use all the bells and whistles.

Again, test it out first and see if it works.

I hope you guys enjoy the new look and new forums when they roll out tomorrow.

Erik

I’m still using Netscape Navigator and have used it for a good seven or eight years. I have never had ANY problems with it so I will keep on using it on both computers. XP on the Desktop and Vista Ultimate on the Laptop. When I find something that I like and I am comfortable with, I will stick with it until the cows come home.[:-^]

Blue Flamer.

I don’t get a choice, since I don’t have my own computer I have to use whatever said library I am at has, usually Internet Explorer. One place does have Firefox as an option, but I have found not everything opens with it, and I think they have the newer version.
