Ike and Rita did not create enough space for development on Galveston island when they destroyed much of what was there, so the plan is to develop more structures on Pelican Island for the hurricanes to target. Brilliant thinking since those of us in the coastal counties will get to pay the bill eventually.
My prediction: After many years and hundreds of millions of dollars wasted the end result will be an empty island with a lot of fancy roads. Central planning shouldn’t be done by government bureaucrats.
If we have to pay the bill, we can also expect some economic benefits and much needed jobs to this area. Of course we could outsource it to some where else and let them reap the benfits. So far the devastating Hurricanes have at least two decades between them. meaning we could have fifteen years of prosperity? All hurricanes are an economic and environmental disasters, yet people continue to move here to the Coast.
