I have decided to split my cars up between the Santa Fe Steamer and the DB Diesel. The Santa Fe Steamer will be a passenger train and the DB Diesel will a freight train. So I will put all the freight cars and the lighted caboose on the DB Diesel. And the Santa Fe will get the lighted carriages. I have a 4 axle flatbed, 3 2 axle box cars and a 2 axle lighted caboose for the freight train. For the passenger train I have 3 lighted carriages with passengers. I will be getting another carriage tomorrow with more passengers for it. I already have the LGB Ball Bearing Wheel Set with Power Pickups and a white LED for it to light it up. That will give me four lighted coaches for my Santa Fe Steamer. Later on I will get a fifth coach and lighting parts and passengers to complete the passenger train. As far as the freight train goes later on I will pick up a crane car to complete the freight train. Then I will see about getting more track for when I setup outside.

Ken,

Neat idea with the capacitor. I have a couple of Bachmann coaches that could benefit from your idea. Can you show me where you hooked this up?

I used two small gauge wires to connect directly to the LGB Ball Bearing Wheel power pickups in parallel with the wires going to the LED light.

Thanks Ken. I will give it a try.

You are welcome.

Well I had my first fatality running my train set. I setup my starter kit steamer with it’s tender and four lighted coaches going around the layout fine. I left it running at about half speed for a few hours. Then I fell asleep for the night. I woke up at 4:30am this morning and heard the engine puffing away. But then I noticed it was puffing away sound wise and the lights were running but the train was standing still. I turned off the throttle and checked everything. No derailment no track blockages nothing. When I picked up the engine I noticed the bottom was very hot and I smelled a hot electrical and hot grease smell coming from the bottom of the engine. So I disassembled the engine and extracted the drive motor. A bearing on one side of the armature had failed thus disabling the drive motor. So the steamer is out of commission until a replacement is available from LGB at my local hobby store.

Well I purchased the replacement drive motor for my starter set locomotive and installed it. The locomotive is up and running like new again.

I have added to my set a Playmobil train station and a Playmobil motorized cargo crane. Also added a Playmobil cargo train with added coal tipper car, flatbed car and a LGB toy train caboose. Just bought a LGB toy train ICE train as well. Will be getting the 2nd motor unit with LED headlights for the ICE as well as the 2nd passenger car and the bistro restaurant car as well. Later on planning to add a Playmobil airport with cargo jet. Also a Playmobil clinic as well.

I have also added a LGB yellow crane car and a silver tank car to my diesel freight consist. And purchased some Bachmann G scale logs for my LGB Flat Car with steaks as a better looking load

Hi Kenneth,

Go to WWW blue-star-train.de to what they have done with dilivering food.

Tom

Cool what they done with that real train. I do not have the room or the finances for something like that though. I will stay with my model trains. Installed a red led light in the back of the ICE 3 train with a switch and a 14V 10A LiFePO4 battery pack to run the led light till I get the motor upgrade kit next year.

Picked up the LGB 2nd motor unit for the LGB Ice 3 train and installed it and removed the LiFePO4 battery pack and added some Lead weight as well. Also picked up the LGB 1st class and Bistro Restaurant Ice 3 cars as well. Also added the metal wheels as well. As a bonus the local hobby shop sold me a old used LGB 10A 24V Jumbo power supply unit that just needed a little bit of work for $75.00. I bought it and took it home and fixed it up and it only took about 1/2 an hour and it was back up and running. Repaired some poor solder connections and cleaned up some minor corrosion points as well. I then purchased the corresponding LGB Wired Remote for the LGB Jumbo 10A 24V power supply. Using it instead of my separate LGB 6A 18V transformer and LGB 5A throttle combo. I love the ability to adjust the braking and throttle ramps and min/max voltages as well. Will look into the Jumbo’s built in automation features later on as well.

Also added some more Playmobil Future Planet sets to my setup. The green base station with solar powered fan and battery powered lights and guns. Also the red base station with battery powered gun and remote controlled car. Also the green remote controlled car as well. Also added more automobiles and figures from the spy tech theme as well. Just picked up the Playmobil Police helicopter as well.
