New to Garden Railroading. Any Advice on my LGB set?

Hello to all. I have always been into the large scale trains since I was a kid (sorry, I’m sure most of everyone on here has too). I always admired the garden railroading and now that my son (6yrs) is old enough to respect electric trains we are going to give it a try.

I have an LGB starter set from about 20 years ago that we recently took out of storage. It is “The Big Train” set which is a small diesel engine and rolling stock for steel industry. I also had 6 sections of 3’ track and a left manual turnout.

I’ve researched and got some ideas for my layout, trackbed, etc. One big question i have is the Power supply that came with the set. Will that be sufficient for my outdoor track or will I need to upgrade?

Also, we are possibly looking at getting a Bachmann Percy and Troublesome Truck starter set. Will the Bachmann run on the LGB track and can i use Bachmann track with LGB or Aristocraft track?

It’s not the track, it’s the load on the loco. The LGB transformers are marginal. Get something larger if you want to run something other than your single LGB loco.

Bachmann trains will run on LGB, Aristocraft, etc. track. I don’t think Bachmann track is compatable with LGB, Aristocraft, etc. Also, Bachmann’s track is not for outdoors.

The Bachmann track I got with my big hauler set was not the best…old LGB track is…all others are second best!

Picked up some “new” LGB from LHS. It is marked “Hungary 2010”. Anyone heard of it being made there?

Yes, been a factory there for some time. The Chinese made LGB was poorly received.

Check out Train-Li track, as good as LGB if not better, same color and many tie color/style choices.

Switches/turnouts are even more robust, but do cost more.
