New Train PIX.

Today, we went to Lafayette IN, and I caught this Westbound mixed freight highballing it to new places. I got these shots. I really like them!

My personal favorite… The SD70ACe in front, followed by a GE. A -8 maybe?

Then another shot.

Comment’s and criticism are welcome!

Justin…Is that the newly relocated track as of {several years ago}, and I’m wondering if that is a new passenger station needed after the relocation out of the downtown…? The station does look of a design of decades ago though…and Is there a tunnel under the tracks there to get to {what looks like the passenger platform, left side of photo…?

Quinton,

Yes, this is the newly re-located section of track as of 1995. (The year I was born) No, it is not a new station (Assuming you are speaking of the building, not the platform) It was moved 2 or three blocks to the new location. It once was located at present day Lafayette Jct. where the Wabash, Monon, NKP, & NYC all converged. With the re-alignment, this eliminated all the need for the CSX (ex Monon) And the numerous crossings on Norfolk Southern (ex Wabash)

In turn the double track NYC was downgraded to single track(Now the KB&S to Templleton and goes to a town in Ill. to y off and go to Kankakee ILL, and points south in Ill, and the old Monon corridor, which is the far left track in the photo’s was used for CSX. NS, laid new track (the darker ballast is NS, the one the train in the photo’s is on) and today parallels the CXS all the way through there yard where at the end it splits away from CSX, and goes to NS’s own “North Yard” in essence. The other yard “The east Yard” goes well, east to Muncie, and points of that nature. No there is not a tunnel. It is a pedestrian bridge. (NOT OWNED BY AMTRAK)

Thanks for the update Justin…That really looks like a nice restored station. Must have been quite interesting to see it moved those several blocks. It appears to be masonary.

Watched movers move a rather large size building here in Muncie on Ball State Campus some years ago and it was quite an interesting project to watch…It too was partial stone with a very large stone flue. But it was done with precision and success. It was moved several blocks and they had to negoticate a 90 degree corner which really took some doing to complete.

The new foundation included a full basement, and then it was filled with sand up to the foundation top and the building was pulled on it’s dollies right over the foundation across the sand and finally posiioned on it’s new foundation…and then the sand was pumped out of the basement so the project could be completed.

Have you ever watched the show “Mega Movers”? They have one about moving Locomotives, and trains.

I brightened up my photo’s a bit. What do you think?
