New Train Series on History

Has anyone heard about a trains series coming to History channel…I think in November?

…No, but if you get any updates, please post them. And welcome to the forum.

All Ive heard about thats new is “Sanddiggers” about underground explosive crews…

In Alaska?

actuly they are called sandhogs

Ice Railroaders of 19th Century America?

Forging a path across frozen rivers of the Northern plains until a bridge could be built.

Imagine the hours of documentaries if 16mm Bell & Howell movie cameras had been available to Mr. Lincoln’s Army.

…Yes, the tunnel building “sandhogs” programs are playing here on TV now. Very interesting. Such working conditions, and tempers can flare from frustration. The other night they were trying to manually replace some very heavy rotating cutter heads {300 lbs.}, and tempers flared to the point of a fight…Must take fellows with very strong will to seek employment in such an environment. My hats off to all and any that do such work. It has to be done if the construction project is to be a success.

OH yea,thats what I meant… Like I said,Ive only heard about it here,havent watched…

Somehow or another I have a difficult time imagining a 300# head as being cute but if you say they were “cuter” I’ll believe that they were “cuter”.

I believe that you mean “cutter” don’t you?

Since it will be on The History Channel, I think we can safely assume it will not deal with anything in the past. Perhaps it will be on trains of the future.

I hope that this program doesn’t pre-empt coming episodes of “Monster Quest,” or I’m going to be in a real snit.

Wow…Another mistake.

I didn’t see the problem, Quentin–maybe if the heads hadn’t been so cute tempers wouldn’t have flared when they had to be replaced! [;)]

…Carl, it was quite a site…The cutters obviously are on the front side of the large rotating disk that supports these cutters, etc., and some were worn and in order to replace them on the spot the hydraulics pulled the big cutter wheel back a few feet and with just a small {very small}, entry opening to crawl thru, the men had to drag the parts and themselves to the tight void in front to get to the pieces to be replaced…{in all the mud and slop}, in such restricted space…well you get the picture.

No hoist to raise them into position and all the rest. That’s the environment they had to do this in, hence tempers got the best of some of them over a problem and they actually started to fight in such a hell hole…

The September 2008 Great Northern Goat publication of the Great Northern Railway Historical Society has the following information:

" …The History Channel’s “Empire Builder Program” has been scheduled, as of now, as Part Four of an Eight-Part Series that has been entitled by The History Channel as "The Extreme Trains."

…the former Great Northern Railway’s Operation of the Empire Builder from 1929 through 1970 will be featured. The program will also include operation of the Empire Builder by Amtrak from 1971 to current operations.

… The History Channel plans to advertise “The Extreme Trains” in the very near future. This overall Eight-Part Series is scheduled to begin broadcast during October-November 2008."

There is no further information on the other parts of the series.
