Santa Claus brought me an airbrush. I have been playing around with it but am unsure of what dilutions I should use for the paints. I have been using acrylic paints to cut down on the fumes. I have heard of using water, distilled water, and rubbing alcohol as a dilutant. What works best in what proportions?
I am also new to airbrushing, but I have been watching a lot of detailing video’s and planning video’s all of them say the same. 10% dilution is recommended. I hope that helps. Dave
10% distilled water is fine for most Accrylics. I’ve been able to shoot Badger ACCU FLEX straight from the bottle with good results. It just takes practice, boys. ALWAYS apply paint to a scrap piece first, making sure a nice smooth slightly wet covering is put down.
Also new here… 10-20% works fine for me, depending on the application…

I’m not an acyrlic paint fan…but the badger accuflex paints don’t need thinned, use them straight from the bottle. and if you do want to thin follow the instructions on the particular paints you’re using…some recommend using 90% isopropyl alcohol instead of water…and always use distilled water…never use tap water.
I mainly use Model Master enamels [oil based] and I rarely thin them to 10%…5% is about right and I have my compressor set at 25 psi…I use Passche h and vl airbrushes, with the higher psi you don’t need to thin the paint as much.
