new williams semi scale hudson motor heats up

Hi , i have a brand new hudson from williams and after 20 minutes of run time the motor gets very hot and the locomotive will slow down . i took it all apart and checked the gearbox for grease and binding ,there was a little bit of binding so i shimmed the motor up a little bit and now there is no binding but the motor still gets hot . I dont know what else to do and wondered if any one would maybe have a answer. thank you for any ideas.

Check to see if this model has the wires that run along side and up over the top of the motor and down into the case. Sometimes the flywheel is too close and will rub those wires. It will get hot and eventually stop when the insulation shorts through.

I’d take it back. Should be under warranty. Don’t mess with it or you’ll void the warranty.

I bought a small Pennsy Hudson about a month ago from Williams and noticed the same thing. I would run it with my string of 14 Industrial Rail Pennsy hoppers and caboose and it did the same thing (motor got hot). I also checked the gear box and it looked fine. I then used a very light oil to lube where it should be. I then let it run on its own for a while to break it in. Then I took about 5 cars off the coal drag and that seemed to do it. No problems with over heating of motor while pulling 9 hoppers and a caboose. It runs fine and does not slow down or over heat. I think that because it is a single motor loco that it does not have the draw bar pull of my other Williams locomotives which are all dual motor diesels. I just can’t run it with the same length trains as my diesels. Right now it is on my layout pulling 5 MTH Railking illuminated heavyweight passenger cars with no problems. If lube and break-in does not work, I would take it back.

Thanks alot for the tips, the flywheel has good clearance and i guess 8 to 10 cars is too much ,I did have it pull 5 to 6 cars and it seemed fine and did not get very hot as before. The loco and tender are heavy being diecast .I guess ill let my diesels do the main pulling. Thanks alot.

What is the cab number on the steam loco and how old is it? I would suspect something being wrong if a Williams engine can’t pull that many freigth cars.

I have the Pennsy S2 steam loco, # 671, by Williams and it don’t get hot like that, but then my engine was made when it was only Williams at the helm, also I can pull around 30 freight cars with this engine. Compared to my diesels by Williams it pulls about the same amount of freight cars.

The only other thing that I can add is that Bachman may have put a smaller motor in the semi-scale Hudsons.

I had a Williams Berkshire that was getting hot. I did a test to measure the temperature on the flywheel periodically. I don’t remember how many cars it was pulling, but I have a small layout so it was probably a short train. The maximum temperature I saw was around 130F after about 45 minutes of running. It felt hot to the touch, but the temperature was not that high. I suspect 130F is no issue.

The hudson is brand new and it is the o-27 semi scale model in baltimore and ohio livery.I also have the williams 6-8-6 steam turbine and it has no problem pulling 10 or more cars and it does not get very hot.
