A new Yahoo Group has just been created on the Altoona-Johnstown area of Pa. It is a general discussion group on Railfanning this historic section of Railroad…Live scanner feeds have been added to the site along with pics…It can be accessed at nsaltoonajohnstown @ Yahoo Groups…check it out! Thanks…Dave Williams
Dave
I see in your post you did mean altoona.had me worried there.
stay safe
Joe
LOL…I was wondering too…never heard of Alioona…
LC
…I will check out that site as that general part of Pennsylvania is rich of Pennsylvania RR history and in general is my home area.
yeah I noticed a typo after I hit send…it was early in the morning when I sent it…what can I say…Dave Williams
Dave: That address gets me to Trainorders.com…Confused, is that the location your address of: nsaltoonajohnstown@yahoogroups…is to direct me to…?
…Ok, Dave, I found it…Finally. Was not familiar with Yahoo Groups.
To find it…go to yahoo groups as a search engine…not regular yahoo…Then type in nsaltoonajohnstown as one word with no spaces between the words…this will direct you to the site…any other questions, email me @dwil89@yahoo.com
…Really liked the subject material but oh so much request for info to sign on…All I could see coming in might be more Spam…
…Live scanner feeds to the nsaltoonajohnstown site…Does that mean the chatter from Dp and crew would be available on here while it is happening live on the “Hill / Curve”…?
Re…Scanner feeds…It is a link to a Railroad radio website…with feeds across the country…There are 3 feeds in Pa…one near Pittsburgh…one near Enola/Harrisburg, and another further East on the Harrisburg line…The radio website has a railfan host the feeds in each area…you will hear crews talking live within the range of that particular feed…On Harrisburg-Enola feed, you will hear 5 different frequencies…including Enola yard…Harrisburg Terminal dispatcher, along with several defect detectors in the area…You can link onto the feed and hear chatter live…as it is happening…and you can continue to surf the web while the feed is on, which I do…I click onto another window without exiting the scanner feed window…its interesting stuff…plus the radio site has links to areas around the US…C
Re spam concerns…I belong to 5 different Yahoo Groups…Spam is a negligible issue with me personally…I see very little…Yahoo has spam blocker…if anything comes questionable to your yahoo mail…it gets put into bulk, or trash…Groups I belong to, are moderated very well so spam is very rare on site itself…Some groups have gone to new members need approval to join…My group is open membership, but if spam were ever to appear on the group…I would switch to approval needed to join as well…There has been no spam so far on my group and it will remain that way…Thanks…Dave Williams..nsaltoonajohnstown@yahoogroups.com
Additional comments on spam…On yahoo…you do not need to necessarily fill in your public profile…some groups may require it…to join, but then you can edit it…my yahoo public profile is minimal…The other info on your membership that you enter to join yahoo is not on the public profile…Dave W.
…Thanks Dave, for posting the above info.
Another recent post talked about Railfan pics…For anyone that belongs to Trainorders, go to Eastern Railroad discussion…I posted some pics Saturday under a post titled 3 trains at Bennington, Pa…they are a sample of what I am uploading to the NS Altoona-Johnstown site…Dave Williams
…That sounds like a train for each track at Bennington’s Curve…Bet that’s an interesting shot.
Yup…1 train coming down the slide Eastbound…another Westbound with rear pushers going up track 3 and Amtrak with a Private car on the rear heading up tgrack 2 westbound…Dave W,
…Isn’t that the site of the [in]famous Pennsylvania RR Red Arrow Passenger car disingaging from it’s train back in the 40’s…With tragic results.
Yes…it went down over the embankment on the track 4…now track 3 side…I met a retired PRR Railroad policeman several years ago who moved to Arizona and was back in town for a visit…He worked out of the PRR Building which is still standing near the Cresson enginehouse…He was down at the site of the Red Arrow wreck the day it happened in 1947…Railfans usually shoot off a rock outcropping on the track 3 side there where westbounders on track 3 practically come right underneath the photographer…It is one of my favorite spots in that area…along with the Slag Dump area…by the Staple Bend Tunnel West Portal…between Conemaugh and Mineral Point…anoher spot where you hike in along a 2 mile hiking/biking trail to a nice railfanning spot…
