New York airport rail system shuts down for maintenance
The ‘Air Train’ was a boondoggle of the first magnitude. Taxi interests, airport bus interests, and politicians on-the-take stifled it as an extension of the MTA NYTA subway system. Gotta love ‘Tammany Hall’.
I took the NY Blue Line subway from lower Manhattan to JFK Airport. It’s an old system to be sure, but rough slack action, rough track and rough train handling made me think that a few billion dollars in improvements wouldn’t be a bit too much. Transitioning from the beat up old Blue Line to the elegant, technically perfect circulator system at JFK was a real shock. Wow! May the rest of New York’s subways be as good some day.
I used it a few times and don´t want to miss it.
20 minutes from Penn station to Jamica and another 10 from there to the airport. Perfect if someone arrives in NYC by train. Will be even better once LIRR runs thier trains into Grand Central, too.
Before the Air Train came into service I tried to avoid JFK as much as possible. The taxi-bus mafia was a nightmere, the subway is just pain.
