New York Central passenger depot- Elyria, Ohio

The Grand Opening-re-opening of the former New York Central passenger depot, now Lorain County Transportation Center went very well on Thursday, the 16th of December. Hopes and plans are for this facility to accomidate passenger rail Amtrak, Greyhound bus service, local taxi service, and Lorain County Transit Service. Building was , after decline of passenger service and subsequent sale of facility, to private party, used as beauty school, prior to that a lumber company. Lorain County purchased building in 2000, under took complete renovation over ten year period. Original depot use commenced in 1925, plans originally called for five story structure to include offices of New York Central railroad. Faciliity also boasted of Railway Express Services, a shoe shine shop, plus, restaurant, or, food service operations. Newly renovated facility is a “Crown Jewel”, so to speak, to downtown Elyria, as well as Lorain County.

…That really sounds interesting. Hopefully, we’ll see some photos.

And welcome to the forum John. Many good people here to converse with.

Thank You for the kind comments. Hopefully, all that has been written about will come to pass. Very hard times here right now, just as the same all over. Just have to hope and keep on praying. Of another interest, last week an Amtrak Genesis locomotive caught fire and burned while pulling into the current station here in Elyria. It has been talked about, I believe, on this forum. Saw it just as fire department was starting to battle the blaze. Thankfully, no one injured. Another subject, next to current station is former freight, Railway Express building. Yearsago it caught fire and was virtually destroyed. Building was purchased by private enterprise of medical personal, who completely restored facility to original looking on exterior, while remodeling interior to serve as offices. There is even a freight loading/unloading handcrane in the west end parking lot.
