You can look for the regulators to push even more for PTC. However, the PTC system had better be tested and proven or an even worse situation could evolve where the PTC system is a flop. Despite the tragedy of the situation, make sure the system that comes out really works.

This doesn’t make sense! To my knowledge, Metro-North installed a Automatic Train Stop system to prevent overspeeding, and surely would have stopped the train somewhere in the 70MPH zone. This leads me to believe that there was a mechanical error in the train, or a glitch in the overspeed protection. Also, it appears that the windows in the passenger cars are sub-standard as there are reports that they shattered. Why weren’t the cars weighted properly? Many of them overturned.
Mr. Carbone, I hope you can back up that statement. Personally, I think you’re full of [excrement]. Unless I hear it from a reliable source, I’m going to assume that both the engineer and Metro North have cause to sue you for libel. I also suspect you’re a troll who went over the top.
I hope the Trains staff removes your comment. (If they do, they might as well also remove this one.)
The engineer of the train has told officials that the brakes had failed, but that account had not been confirmed. Oh they failed, they failed to come on because he never tried to slow down.
Let the NTSB do the investigation and determine the cause. If you’re not on the NTSB investigating team, don’t make comments that make you look like an idiot.
According to NTSB a few miles in advance of the point of derailment the train speed increased from 60 mph to 82 mph----on 75 mph track which it sustained thru a mile of 70 mph until the entry to the 30 mph curve, after which it stopped from a speed of over 100 feet a second, in less than 10 seconds.
No brakes and an open throttle until 6 seconds before the two event recorders indicated “0” speed.
Event Recorders…running 82 on 75 mph track…engr reported “lucid,” no obvious chemical influences, 20 years on a passenger railroad, short of route miles, long on train quantity repeating over the routes.
Weather clear…Track fast, but not that…
What chance that, while accelerating and getting ready to brake to slow to 75, then 70, then 30, at the point of doing that a micro, mini, Coach Ubiak, brain stroke-lette hits him; His brain circuits re-established or re-routed, just before, or as the tragedy commences, he says to himself the brakes didn’t work !
Running Amtrak blended braking trains, I gave away the first reduction of brake pipe pressure to apply the train brakes by keeping the throttle open. The next reduction applied the Dynamic Brake 'cause I’d closed the throttle…Might explain the open throttle? Slack Control… the open throttle…
All assumptions here become…when they likely will be…why was the throttle open so long?
Here we go again, jumping to conclusions, media included.
I will wait for the FACTS…so should everyone else, media included.
Concise article! Good job.
“Driver” and “carriages” are no way to report on American Railroading…as with other outlets.
I was going to comment here, but think I will take it up with the circulation department at Trains Magazine. No excuse for allowing libelous hearsay to remain up on the forum. Between that and the political rants, just don’t feel like looking at this garbage anymore.
Excessive speed in curve?
We all know that many things can go wrong with any train, why do some people automatically have to spout off like idiots with absolutely NO evidence whatsoever to back up their statements? Mr. Carbone, many libel and slander lawsuits have been won over less than what you said, and like many say, " The Internet is forever.". As for me, I’ll also wait until the NTSB issues their statement. Until then, prayers out to the families and friends of those killed and injured.
Thank you for the coverage & video.
