New York station, steam locomotive damaged by runaway freight car

Possibly, the placement of NYC #6721 (on display at the station area) was fortuitous? It took the brunt of the force of the covered hopper car’s momentum; and lessened the impact of the structural damage at the station?

See what happens when you bleed off the reservoir during switching, bad, See what happens when there’s no split point derail or any derail on a train that’s displayed, bad. That switch should of been lined & locked against the display, but hey s*** happens. Too sad it was a historic piece of railroading, let the finger pointing begin.

How could a display be on a “live track,” reachable by other equipment? I thought Insurance requirements forbade that.

Yep, that’s a shame. But admit it, wouldn’t you love to see a video of it??

Had not the locomotive and tender been there the hopper would of gone completely thru the building. Hopefully they can repair that fine old NYC station.

Display locomotive was not connected to any track. Hopper car crashed through end of line bumper proceeded to cross lot and hit the display and pushed into the locomotive driving into the new addition on the building used to cross the tracks. Area is over old tunnel that used to connect to the tracks. Had that display not been there, the car would have went clean through that building. At one time, Union Station had 8 tracks served by that tunnel. Also the new bridge across the tracks serves the Adirondack Senic Railroad. Several years ago someone vandalized a train car above village of Clayville, NY. The car rolled the distance though, Saquoit, Washington Mills, New Hartford, city of Utica including a center of the Schyler street run of a couple of miles. It Ended up hitting train cars in in the former NYSW locomotive shops in Utica.

It is a good thing no one was seriously injured our killed. That freight car could have very well struck more vehicles or people in the street not paying attention. With all the recent tragedies such as the Amtrak 188 incident, we cannot afford anymore loss of life.

Baseball Hall of Fame in area

Reconstructed Fort Stanwix, Oriskany Battlefield, grave of Francis Bellamy(pledge of allegiance), F.X. Matt Brewery(Saranac beer), Remington Arms Co. firearms museum and Country Store, Historic Gen. Nicholas Herkimer Home(revolutionary war), and remains of numerous old Erie Canal, and Black River Canal locks and the “huge” functioning Lock #17 Barge Canal Lock and numerous others are also in the area. Most are FREE of charge for visitors and closer to Union Station than Baseball Hall of Fame, which is a worthwhile site to visit also.
