This past October my wife and I took an extended road trip from San Francisco to Cass, WV. On our return this photo was taken from Hwy 50 when driving from Dodge City to Garden City, Kansas.
Can someone please help with identifying the type of locomotives in the photo. Thanks,
Wayne
Sure:
UP# 7692 AC45CCTE
UP# 9384 C40-8W
(Not a bad pic by the way)[tup]
According to the current UP roster # 7692 is a GE 9-44CW and the 9384 is a GE 8-40CW.
Thanks. You guys are good! And very knowledgeable. [wow]

Here’s a closeup of 7692…what a beautiful locomotive and ya gotta luv the color scheme.

UP 7692 is not a Dash 9. It’s a 2007-built ES-44AC. The “C45ACCTE” is UP’s designation for units such as this, with controlled tractive effort (the “CTE”), but, regardless of the “45” in UP’s designation, it still has only 4400 horsepower.
Got to love that blue sky also ! Makes the paint stand out much more ! Thanks for sharing…
Thanks guys, you’ve all been a help and it is appreciated. As much as I do like diesels, the highlight of our trip was my ride in the cab of Shay Locomotive#11 at Cass Scenic Railroad. Of course, I bet a ride in a diesel would be as much fun for this ol retired guy.
