Newbie spray painting question

I thought all spray painting was to be done in a spray booth. Watching the DPB cd last night, Teri Thompson was spraying acrylics with no booth. Does the fact that water soluble paint would not have the fumes of other paint types, does their use negate the need for a booth?

You don’t have the toxic fumes that oil base does, but you still don’t want to breath the over spray. The over spray can still get all over everything.

I think he did mention good ventilation in the presentation, I believe he said he was doing this as a demonstration. I’ll have to watch it again to be sure.

Since I don’t have a spray booth, I usualy spray base coat outside on a day with a light breeze. On days that are calm, I spray the details - the bonus is that the sun is usualy very bright on those days, making it very easy to see what I’m doing.

I live in a condominium so venting my spraybooth outside is impossible. Therefore, I ONLY use acrylics in my airbrush. The 3-stage filter system on my spraybooth captures all particulates and with the acrylics, there are no fumes to worry about. I still wear a mask though, so there’s no chance of my breathing in some of the particulates, especially when I get up close to the item being sprayed. If you’d like to know more about my spraybooth, email me and I’ll be glad to share the information.

Hope this helps.
