NEWS!! Duluth transportation museum will be receiving the NP SD45 from CN!

I just learned that CN had sent the locomotive to the scrap yard and then heard that the museum in Duluth wanted it because it was the first SD45 the NP had purchased. There is one problem with it, when it was sent to the scrap yard, the main generator was removed so it’s coming without the generator. So we will be looking for someone to donate one of those to us.

James

Well, they kind of already knew that Duluth wanted it before hand, they just took the generator because they wanted it.

Alec

Exactly.

And James, we not a transportation museum anymore, we are a railroad museum.

No that’s not the reason. It was scrapped. See what happened was the CN had sent to the scrap yard and it was starting to get scrapped, but then someone spoke up and all scrapping project halted on it. So I’m sure someone will donate one here in the next year or so. But I guess the thing runs still as the CN said… You know the CN. Plus even if the CN wanted that generator, what would they use it for?

James

Well, from what Ive heard nothing has been scrapped since the last retirement. I know the 6588,7519, and the 7524 are going to West Virginia to get scrapped.

Alec

hmmm interesting. Well I’m sure we can get one from somewhere. Maybe even possible to get one out of one of those SD45s being scrapped. But I wonder what they are going to use that generator for, if it wasn’t scrapped? Possibly for replacement in another locomotive?

James

Must be, im sure those are universal in most of the older lines, and the CN has about 30 or so ex SD40s (now SD40-2Rs) so Im sure they can be fitted with the SD45 generators.

Alec

I suppose. That Generator should slip right in then since the SD40 series and SD45 series were made by the same company so I am sure they had the same generators. So ya, two and two fit together. At least they care what happens to there other locmotives. “EH”[swg]

James

James, I was looking around, and if we need a 645 generator, we can DEFINATLY find one.

Ya I had now doubt about that. They’re all over the place. So we should beable to get one soon.

James

That’s a great museum they have up there in Duluth and if that seems a long way to go for some of you, the railfanning in the Duluth Superior area is extremely interesting (and it helps to really like Great lakes boats too). There are also rail things of interest to see in Ashland WI which is not too far away, and some spectacular state parks both in WI and MN.

Dave Nelson

Unit is in Superior.

Alright, this week it should be popping up at the museum. Can’t wait.

James

I hope you guys keep it in view until you’re ready to paint it!

I’m going to try to make it there over the summer, and I’ll be expecting a lot of V20 action! [:P]

It will certainly be in its WC paint for quite some time. And I don’t know if you will beable to see a lot of action with it at first since it doesn’t have the main generator. But we hope to get some soon.

Happy railroading[(-D]

James

You better tell us when your coming so we can give you a tour!

And the unit is a half mile away right now, sitting in Rices Point yard.

It’s sitting at Rices point!!! So we will be picking it up in a day or two. How did you know about it??

James

Mackey.

BNSF also brought four CN GP9M looking things in the Belknap shops Saturday.

So Mackey is the know it all, eh. Plus what are they going to do with those GP9ms they brought up… interesting.

James

Max, Im coming up real soon, probably within a week or so.
