OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific shut down Armourdale Yard in Kansas City, Kan., last week, shifting its switching work to the adjacent 18th Street Yard. The move, which union officials say affected 20 to 100 jobs, is UP’s latest in the Kansa…
Maybe it’s not enough to close hump yards, but also former hump yards, too.

All kinds of new places to park idle equipment!!
I was curious as to what “adjacent” meant in the article. Armourdale Yard is literally on the other side of the UP KC Metro Division main. If it weren’t for the labels on the map I looked at, one might think it was all one yard.
What is the lineage of the two yards? Is this actually more like eliminating a duplicate facility gained in a merger? Or were both yards UP all along?
Armourdale is the former Rock Island/Cotton Belt yard. 18th Street was one of the main yards for the pre-MP/WP merger Union Pacific in Kansas City. The Rock Island entered Kansas City from the west via trackage rights on the UP. That is why they are located adjacent to one another. Everything got combined after the UP-SP merger in 1996.
