CRESTON, Iowa — A BNSF Railway engineer and conductor died early Sunday when the coal train they were operating slammed into the rear of a work train, the Creston News Advertiser has reported. The accident occurred around 7 a.m. at McPherson, Iowa; both employees worked from BNSF’s Creston terminal. The accident occurred on BNSF’s Creston Subdivision, a route dispatched with centralized traffic control. This common system enables the dispatcher to grant trains authority to operate via lineside signals. Those same signals are capable of detecting where trains are located, and if functioning properly, would give red stop signals to any train approaching another.
