CEDARBURG, Wis. — Ryan Schoenfeldt, a frequent TRAINS photo contributor and occasional author, died last night. He was 34.

Schoenfeldt grew up in Manitowoc, Wis., and took an interest in trains from a young age. He moved to Cedarburg and took a job in the Milwaukee area in 1997. The presence of relatives in Randolph, Wis., a rural area along Union Pacific’s lightly trafficked Adams Subdivision, frequently brought him to the area, and the line became a favorite subject.

Admirers will likely remember Schoenfeldt for his remarkable silhouettes of railroad subjects, often made with a wide-angle lens. But he was equally good with human interest subjects, frequently including working railroaders and trackside bystanders into his work. The Center for Railroad Photog

My condolences to his family, coworkers, & friends. I met him once trackside and he was a nice guy to (briefly) chat with. Rest in Peace Ryan.

34 is much too young to pass. RIP

Ryan was a great guy, and a good friend to the TRAINS staff. I still can’t believe I’m writing about him in the past tense. We’re going to miss him very much.
