Next up for Amtrak

Who’s you like to see be the next Amtrak prez?

Here’s some food for thought:

Krebs
Haverty
Burkholder (not sure I have the name right - former WC)
Goode
Snow
Grinstein
Reistrup (again)

Gee Don, I’m not that up on railroad execs to know the names of the players or their records, but I hear Mike Brown is still available.[swg]

Ed Burkhart or Reistrup would be good candidates, but they just got rid of a railroad man, a guy who knows what the hell is going on, why would they want somebody else that will oppose legislation that they KNOW won’t help a RAILROAD.

Michael Brown? [:-^]

Honestly, I dont see any reason the board members would chose someone with real experience, seems like thats the last thing they would want on the resume is someone that again might actually make a difference.

It will be very interesting to see who gets the nod.

Probably Mineta…I shudder to think, they’d stop all trains, have the passengers and crew flown or bussed home and have the equipment scrapped on spot…

Look for someone with the folowing “qualifications” to be Bush’s hatchet-man to replace Gunn:

  1. Heavy financial and business background (maybe a banker or broker)
2… Well connected to a Fortune 100 company with solid Republican credentials
  2. Highly intelligent
  3. Well spoken
  4. A proven Bush-Mineta-etc sycophant (for some, this may be oxymoronic vis-a-vis #3 above)
  5. Someone who can easily disappear into the woodwork after the “job” is done
  6. Little or no railroad experience

It will be quite a show to see if and how Congress goes after this travesty.

I’m already making plans to do my future cross country travel in Canada.

I have no inside information (obvious, to some [;)] ). This is just my 1.3 cents worth.

Some people have short memories. Paul Reistrup has already served a term as president of Amtrak, prior to Graham Claytor. He was the VP-Passenger of B&O in the mid to late 1960’s and was considered an excellent pick for Amtrak at the time.

All of the people you named are good people to head Amtrak except John Snow. I wonder how many of them would be interested. But judging by Bush’s attempt to appoint a Supreme Court Associate Justice with no judicial experience I would not be surprised if someone without railroad experience were nominated. Just my two pennies worth.

Wasn’t there a guy in Texas who ran that tourist train in Ft. Worth for a short while and managed to collide with a freight? I think he was a lawyer too…lol…

He could do the job…kind of a RR version of Mike Brown…

Perfect guy to run the thing into the ground…
