nice find at the hobby shop today

I guess you might call it a local hobby shop about 45 minutes away. But was shopping up that way and we had to kill time, so my wife said why don’t we go to the hobby shop there. I was surprised to find 2 Guilford engines. One a GP-38 ( labeled boston & maine) by Athearn & a Uboat by Atlas with Maine Central label with the Guildford colors. I couldn’t pass it up knowing that Guilford is hard to come by, so I bought them both for about $160 which I thought wasn’t bad… so that made my day…

PS… have about 10 more feet complete my main loop!!!

have a dry weekend… raining here in the North east

Mike

It’s raining here in the Southeast as well. A bit chilly, I might add. Was the Athearn an RTR? What type of U-Boat was the Atlas?

Sounds like you found something good. I have actually seen a Guilford locomotive here in the South once. I love that paint scheme.

It was an Athearn RTR, but must be an earlier one, there is no DCC plug… so I will have to rewire it… and the Atlas was a U23B…

Hmm…Yeah, must’ve been an early one. And an Atlas U23B…As I said above, sounds like you did pretty well.

Not all Athearn RTR have the plug . It depends on which model -35’s do 38/40 do not.

I figure I can rewire it, but will practice on some older engines first!! hahahah

But pumped up when I saw the 2 there… couldn’t pass it up. He also had a Boston & Maine unit there… but maybe next time… hahahahaaa

The Athearns are not bad to rework for DCC, just remember to isolate the bottom brush clip, (clip off the grounding triangle and then reinstall clip and cover it with electrical tape before reinstalling the motor) While you have the motor out you might take a look at whether it could benefit from some washers to reduce the end play and quiet it down the drive train a bit.
Sounds like you made a good find, and have a supportive wife. Hope it drys out out there, the Great lakes area lost our clouds overnight and it is warmer and sunny today.
