I guess you might call it a local hobby shop about 45 minutes away. But was shopping up that way and we had to kill time, so my wife said why don’t we go to the hobby shop there. I was surprised to find 2 Guilford engines. One a GP-38 ( labeled boston & maine) by Athearn & a Uboat by Atlas with Maine Central label with the Guildford colors. I couldn’t pass it up knowing that Guilford is hard to come by, so I bought them both for about $160 which I thought wasn’t bad… so that made my day…
PS… have about 10 more feet complete my main loop!!!
have a dry weekend… raining here in the North east
The Athearns are not bad to rework for DCC, just remember to isolate the bottom brush clip, (clip off the grounding triangle and then reinstall clip and cover it with electrical tape before reinstalling the motor) While you have the motor out you might take a look at whether it could benefit from some washers to reduce the end play and quiet it down the drive train a bit.
Sounds like you made a good find, and have a supportive wife. Hope it drys out out there, the Great lakes area lost our clouds overnight and it is warmer and sunny today.
