NJ Transit Executive Director James Weinstein resigns

New Jersey politics is …, well, unique.

NJT ought to review the North Shore Line Mass movement of people per the following:

"On June 24, 1926 the 28th International Eucharistic Catholic Congress convened at Mundelein. The NSL had trains arrive every 40 seconds. By 10 a.m. approximately 130,000 people had arrived in Mundelein via the North Shore. From daybreak to midnight- 820 trains made up of 5,216 cars made the trip to and from Mundelein without a single mishap. " Quoted from NorthShoreLine.com Website.

Shows what a little planning and competance can accomplish.

This story is quite interesting in that Weinstein has been under fire since Sandy but morale at NJT has been so low and falling under his direction. SuperBowl fiasco was because NJT either didn’t have the right questions to ask the NFL, didn’t know what the right questions were, and/or didn’t know the right answers any way. (The answer is probably all three.) Nor did they seem to stand up to the NFL and say, “no, this is how you move the number of people at issue” because they really didn’t know how nor have the people who care. Weinstein’s “resignation” was a political resignation designed months ago, probably before the election, with Hakim’s selection being forged at the same time. The question is whether or not Hakim can operate a railroad on her background with the Turnpike Authority and NYC’s MTA.

I’m worried about what Ronnie Hakim might do to the employees of NJT. She carried out Christie’s idea of privatizing toll collections on the NJ Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. I am concerned if she will work with Amtrak on improving the NorthEast Corridor and with the Port Authority about improving bus service into and out of the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Why do we expect that an administration that puts commuters needs behind political ambitions (GWB Lane closures on the first three days of School in NJ ) can address the transit needs of a major event like SuperBowl with any hope of delivering a successful transit plan for the state of New Jersey. The rail connection for the Meadowlands Sports Complex which operates only on NFL game days for limited times has proven that NJTRANSIT is totally out of touch with the transit needs of its customers.
