That’s pretty much it. There are the Rivarossi cars that have absolutely no relation to anything NJT ever ran. There’s also the Atlas U34CH, which was done in a couple of schemes, NJT being one of them. Overland did an incredibly small run of the GP40PH-2 in NJT paint in brass; these units are long out of production and rare (and expensive when they turn up).
I agree that it’d be great to have an ALP-46, but I don’t think it very likely. Passenger modeling in general is less popular than freight, and since NJT is a geographically small operation there likely aren’t that many people too interested in it. I suspect the only reason we got Atlas’ ALP-44 is because they were already doing an AEM-7 and the two are fairly similar. Same with the Spectrum F40; since Bachmann was already doing the model they could just slap a different scheme on it. An ALP-46, though, is strictly an NJT engine, so they couldn’t just put different paint on it and have it appeal to any other (prototypical) modelers. Your best bet for an ALP-46 is to do one yourself, starting with a Roco DB101 (the same unit the prototype -46s are based from).
I belive Model Model Craftsman even published an article on the NJT conversion of the Rocco locomotive and someone has decals available, too. Worth checking out.
That was a Frank Cicero piece in the May 2003 RMC. I haven’t seen decals for it (I think Frank had his custom-made, but that was 4 years ago and things may have changed).
I don’t think so; the Bachmann (old and new) and Walthers/American GK E60s were only done in Amtrak paint. There are some people who’ve custom-painted NJT E60s, but AFAIK there’s never been a mass-produced model of it.
I’ve heard that NJT is looking to pick some “next-generation” ALP-46 locos, so it would be a good time for another railroad to piggyback on the order. Thing is, though, outside of the NEC and the Chicago South Shore & South Bend, I don’t know of any other electrified roads.
And I quote fomr Locomotive 2008 “By spark and wire” By Greg Gormick “Caltrain’s project 2025 is wrapped around electrification of 52 miles of ex-Southern Pacific Peninsula Commute service” “one scenario suggests using non-FRA compliant European bilevel EMU’s.” “Two options are electric haulage of existing rolling stock or complete replacement with new low floor bilevels. The ALP-46 locomotivehas been used as the model for Caltrain’s calculations so far. A decision must be made next year.”
I think it was likely a custom painted American GK model that I think I spotted in an MRR or RMC magazine a while back. It’s interesting that Bachmann didn’t consider offering their latest E60 in NJT as this seems to be a popular transit agency to model. The paint scheme is a relatively easy one to apply, imho.
Actually, there WAS an NJ Transit E60CH being offered by Walthers (I found a scan of a walthers catalog featuring the model). Unfortuneately, they simply painted it the Amtrack silver and black, but with NJ transit stripes and logos. You’d have to re-do the nose and the cabs to get the right paint scheme, but it was otherwise alright.
I find it easier to pick up undecorated E60 models and pain them up. They are on Ebay if you look, and keep an eye out. I’ve gotten atleast three that way.
