Is Nickle Plate 2-8-4 755 owned by the city of Conneaut,Ohio
She was certainly given to the city of Conneaut in 1955, and I can find no subsequent transfer (as with 765/“767” in 1985) of formal title to the Museum or another organization.
The Museum certainly treats the engine as if it were ‘theirs’; whether or not this involves city revenue I don’t know (but could find out the details the next time I’m there, as I’m a member and plan to be working over their collection of railroad watches when the museum can reopen). The amount of cagy language about whether 755 is actually owned by a museum that might be concerned with questions relating to restoration donations is a little amusing once you know to look for it…
The City of Conneaut owns the museum and therefore owns the locomotive and cars. The city takes care of utilities and any property taxes. The museum members are responsible for upkeep, repairs and maintenance. We recently had the locomotive and cars repainted and the hopper car is finally back to its original oxide red color. I have not been involved with the museum long enough to know all the particulars of the acquisition.
