NKP 765 has a summer job

Just found out that she will be working in North Judson Indiana at the Hoosier Valley RR Museum. The line is an old C&O line but it looks like we are going to Indiana as well as Michigan(trainfest 2009) this summer. The press relese and ticket information can be found at 765.org.

I can’t find an answer to the two most important questions involving this event: (1) how she is getting there and (2) how she is getting back.

Gabe

I haven’t been to North Judson in a very long time–we got as close as LaCrosse in late 2007. I wouldn’t mind seeing one of these beauties (765, 1225, 4449) along the tracks somewhere outside of Owosso, but can’t justify the time away from the lake house to anyone else [sigh]. That just means that more planning work has to be done!

Wow! I got Norht Judson once in a while! I will have to get up there sometime. Will be nice to see my first steam loco that actually operates in real life!

I do not know Indiana routes as well. When she did her brake test she used CF&E track into Ohio and she was towed on NS to get to the CF&E track.could the old PRR route be the way over and then a connection to the museum line?

Joe, the CF&E would have to cross the connecting line (former C&O/PM), but I’m not sure if there’s a connecting track there (Thomaston?), let alone one that can handle an eight-coupled steam locomotive.

There is a connecting track in the NE quadrant at Thomaston between the old NKP and the CKIN. So, it looks like the 765 will be back on familiar track once again (Ft Wayne - Thomaston).

Now, the question will be…under steam power or handled by the local L41?

This could be a great summer.

…Is 765 considered a heavy engine…? What really is it’s weight…Is it in the 250 ton range…{engine and tender ready to roll}

Now, the question will be…under steam power or handled by the local L41?<<

Steam enginens in general need to be under steam even when towed, The steam is lubrication for cylinder/pistons and the steam also powers any automatic lubricators.

To move a steam engine without steam usually the drive rods need to be removed.

I was going for he crossing of the former Pennsy (CFE) tracks, Ed. I guess that was Hanna, if the NKP crossed at Thomaston. I suspect that a shortline might have a better chance of hosting the steam power these days. (Not that the homecoming wouldn’t be nice!)

I’m thinking they would most likely prefer to use the CF&E west to Hanna where there is a crossing with the former C&O/PM line. Question is; is there an interchange at Hanna that can handle 765’s rigid wheelbase? If not, then she’d likely use the old NKP west to Thomaston; most likely not under her own power.

That is what happened in Lima.railamerica changed the connection track and the curve was too tight for the 765.

There was a steam locomotive there thay were having troule getting funds for a while back. It hauled coal for it living. Any whaerabouts?

There is not a connecting track at Hanna but there is one at Thomaston in the NE quadrant. It was built within the last 2 years. How convenient.

I went to Thomaston in early December and followed at CKIN train south. The crew talked about handling grain trains to the NS, but at that time there hadnt been anything run yet.

CKIN and North Judson will certainly have lots of visitors this summer.
