John H. White’s “epic” book - The American Railroad Freight Car is an almost exhaustive study on cars up to about 1900. The NMRA book looks like the ideal chronological sequel, picking up the story where White’s book ends.
My question… approximately how much of the NMRA book is devoted to:
- Pre WWI
- USRA to Pre-WWII
- Post WWII?
I’ve got this book. It consists of selections from a collection of photos made over a three year period near Harrisburg, PA from 1946 to 1948. What is there is primarily the rolling stock that made it through WWII, plus a scattering of nearly new equipment. About 10% are cars that date from before WWI, but in their post WWII configuration and condition.
The photos are grouped by car type. A wealth of statistical info about the North American rail car fleet is provided. I enjoyed the book, even though I model the late 1950s, as many of the newer cars in this book are nearing the end of their useful life.
