NMRA Reccomended freight car weight for HO scale is as follows.
One ounce of weight for the car.
then add one half ounce of weight per inch of car length.
so a 55 foot covered hopper, should weight about 5 ounces.

The correct ‘standard’ weight for the car depends on the length of the car in question. Please refer to the NMRA RP page at http://www.nmra.org/standards/rp-20_1.html for more information. A freight car should weigh 1 ounce plus 1/2 ounce for every inch of length. Using the calculator, I have developed a chart for just about any length of car I could possibly own. For example, a 54 foot covered hopper should weigh 4.72 ounces based on the NMRA formula. I would round up to 4.75 ounces. My calculations are: 1 divided by 87 (times 12), times length of car in feet times .5+1.
