OK,…
now that Roundhouse (MDC) is no more, where do I get parts for my shays and more (cheap) Shay kits for my money.
I can not afford Brass at todays prices !!!
any body know of who mit stock parts for them?
thank you for your time,
Russ
Well, one could try train shows and out of the way Mom &Pop hobby shops.Check e bay.Contact Athearn and see if they have the parts on hand.
BTW…I have seen MDC RTR Shays for as low as $79.00 at train shows-be sure to look UNDER the front of the dealers table and talk to the dealer as he may cut you a deal. Also,I have had out of the way Mom & Pop hobby shops to cut me a deal AFTER ASKING what would their lowest price be…Always ask for a better price but,be reasonable in your offer…
I agree that what could be a rather lengthy fishing expedition is in order. Start calling small LHS’s from state-to-state, send some e-mails, and keep an eye on e-bay.
Good luck. Although, I doubt that you will really need it. I’m pretty sure you’ll surprise yourself.
What sort of “parts” are you looking for?
Detail parts? Try Bowser, PIA, Precision Scale.
Chassis parts? Do what the logging roads did: make 'em yourself or cannibalize a spare hulk. The MDC shay kits float through Ebay all the time, at decent prices.
Drive train parts? NWSL makes pretty much everything you need.
Gosh, aren’t those small Mom & Pop hobby shops the same ones that everyone doesn’t much care about. You know, the guys that charge full retail so we really don’t want to do business with them.
MDC/Roundhouse isn’t gone, it was just absorbed by Horizon Hobbies, who also got Athearn. They are releasing some of the newer MDC kits as Athearn, older ones are supposed to still be Roundhouse kits. Not much info on the Roundhouse engine kits yet, but I assume parts will still be available from Horizon who acquired them too.

Some of the small Mom & Pop hobby shops sell at 10-12% discount and will be willing to make a deal…Full price hobby shops ran by Mom & Pop will cut some deals as well if you make a reasonable offer…
BTW: Who is this everyone you speak of? Think of this…IF everyone don’t care about these shops how do they stay in business for years-even generations? [;)] So,you see the “Internet hobbyist” doesn’t speak for the hobby in general…[:D]
What I was told by Athearn is they had been sent all parts from MDC Roundhouse and where waiting to be unpacked.
This was early in the year, I would send Athearn an e-mail for some new updated info.
