Hello? A thread got cancelled. A lot of people made some really good points in it, peace was made, discussions were happening with I think quite a bit of good will, and those of us taking part in the thread learned more about how to talk to each other without stomping on feelings. There was, true, one minor tiff on the sidelines (which was resolved). There are many aspects to the hobby, and certainly one of them is learning how to enjoy each others’ work and avoid hurting feelings. It was the reason behind the initial post, and I thought it was a useful thing to bring up. A productive discussion took place. So in marches Erik Bergstrom saying, “The rest of you, are you finished insulting one another. Say it with me: HOBBY” and locks the thread.
I didn’t feel insulted at all until I read Bergstrom’s remark. Why insult all of us? And why prevent us from talking?
I don’t like feeling [censored]. Will this post be [censored] too?
I guess I need some time away from any and all aspects of MR. [alien]
Usually I’m the first to jump on Bergie’s side when he locks a thread. These are Kalmbach’s forums, and he, as moderator, has the right to lock any thread he sees fit to.
But, I would have liked a bit more expanation about why it was locked.
Was it the 3-way argument with Marknewton, Brunton, and Vsmith? Or was it the topic itself?
I hope we can have similar discussions in the future without:
Insults and
Censorship.
This will be one of the few times I’ve really disagreed with Bergie’s call.
Just a hobby? Interesting coming from a man who makes his living off of the hobby![:-^]
The subject is rhetorical dialectic. Then it took an unfortunate turn for the worse when several personal attacks and insults started. This is usually the case with these type of topics. How sad.
I agree with the OP that Dave’s thread probably shouldn’t have been locked. Although I had my own personal feelings about the subject matter, the thread did satisfy the basic intention that Dave V had in mind: to give us something to think about.
I’ve had my issues as well with the locking and deletion of other threads. I will still stand by my thoughts that sometimes Bergie’s personal feelings on a subject have a lot of play in his decision to lock or delete a thread. I wonder if he runs it by somebody else first before he locks a thread or if he just locks it without consulting anybody? You know, kind of like asking, “Hey what do you think of this?” Thus my not coming on here as much as I used to.
I can kind of see why it was locked, there was a lot of arguing over pointless stuff. It started out OK with a great post by Dave V, but near the middle it got a little…sorry, can’t think of the right word, but you know what I mean.
I havn’t read the whole thing yet, so forgive me if you disagree with me, I don’t want to start another argument.
