Non-North american model railroads

Through the years I’ve noticed that there have been very few model railroads focusing on European, oriental, South American, or Austrailian subjects. I’m sure there must be some great layouts out there, so if you are in possesion of one, please share some pictures and information with us.

Welcome, traveler,

I notice that you are fairly new to the forums, so you might not realize that we have posters from the UK, continental Europe and all around the Pacific rim. I’m sure that a bunch of them will chime in shortly!

I personally have been modeling Japanese prototype in HOj (1:80 scale on 16.5mm gauge track) since 1960, and my present grand operating scheme dates from 1964. Sorry I can’t add any photos - although all they’d show at the moment would be some steel frames that will eventually coalesce into benchwork for a layout, located in a rather messy garage. (The old layout was dismantled in late June, the new one is just getting started.

Judging by what I have seen in Tetsudo Mokei Shumi, the Japanese-language model railroad magazine, there are quite a few layouts in Japan which fall into the ‘little gem’ category; physically small, but jam-packed with impeccable detail. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen any postings by anyone who actually lives and models in Japan.

Once again, welcome aboard. Glad to have you.

Chuck

Oh yes were here! I love the European RR’s, my problem is that I love too many of them. I have mostly German, Italian and my love Wuttemberg. But I also love the American stuff too. I have some European buildings, and a bit of that look in general, but I also run my steam era-diesel era American stuff too, although not usually together.

The Platelayers is a club modelling British railways. Every 2 years we put on the Great British Train Show, the biggest and best all-British model railway show in North America. There are pictures on the website.

Also check out the British Railway Modellers of North America.

Otto, I don’t live in Japan, but I like Chuck I model Japanese railways, amongst others. I don’t know whether this attempt at posting an image will work, as I’m a Mac user having some “'ken dramas” with the new forum software, so here goes: If this doesn’t work, try this link: http://marknewton01.fotopic.net/p24106592.html Cheers, Mark.

I was at ashow in Lynden,WA last november and there were several fellows from Canada there who were modeling Scottish,Irish and English railroads in that cool English style of dioramas with fiddle yards or sector tracks on the ends. Very cool.! Otto Ray Sing,(oh I get it) you could shedule a trip to the lower 48 around then. Lynden is about an hour and a half north of Sea-Tac.

Hey There - there are a few of us who model railroads south of the border - I have finished my plans for a Cuban On30 layout - based around a sugar mill. I also model UK 1960’s steam in OO scale.

I was always put off of the fact that scratch building was so time consuming, but now I know the finished product is worth the wait and give you a lot of satisfaction.

Regards,

Stephen.

There’s a “road show” layout I’ve seen around New England, particularly at the Greenberg shows in Wilmington, MA, which is all European. It’s nicely done, and the scenery and structures greatly add to the European trains. They also run catenary for the electric units. I don’t remember if it’s live overhead wire or dummy, but it looks very good and took a lot of effort to model in any case.

Here are pictures of my British layout.

This site should feed your need for pictures from a German exhibition earlier this year in Dortmund. Go to berichte and you will find plenty of different layouts on exhibition, even one with a Mexican theme!

For your monthly dose of railroading take out a subscription for Railway modeller (British raiways) or Continental modeller (everywhere else including North America) from Peco publishing (UK).

greetings,

Marc Immeker

Lot of neat stuff there, but I think the “Mexican” theme layout is actually a Cuban sugar cane themed layout. It looks like something I saw in Continental Modeler a few years ago.

Andre

I agree about that German site. Very Cool!! But there is both a Mexican layout and a Cuban layout. The Cuban layout has the name Elian Gonzales on the tender of thone of the engines. Ring any Bells???
