Due to the information I have recieved on the red comet, I nave found the passenger cars for it at my local hobby shop and bought them. He sold the engine years ago, so I am insearch for that. I am a die-hard fan of the N&W J’s. Could ya’ll tel me who makes them?
Here’s a list:
Lionel #746, as well as an MPC version and 1995 release(Railsounds/no TMCC) from the same tooling. All can run upwards of $300, even more for certain Postwar versions.
Lionel Scale J #611 from 2002(uncataloged), very difficult to find, $1000+, TMCC, RS, Odyssey, Incredible N&W Hooter whistle recording
MTH Rugged Rails Bantam J with Locosound, $180, With PS 2.0, $200
MTH Railking with PS-1 or PS-2(roughly same size as Lionel 746), $150-300
MTH Scale J, PS-1, $500 or so
MTH Scale Unshrouded J, PS-2, $700+
Williams Scale Brass, $200-300
Williams 746-sized J, $300+
An MTH Railking or Wlliams J is a good buy. Are you looking for this apart from the red commodore vanderbuilt? The J would look funny pulling those red prewar cars. The trucks and couplers would have to be changed over to postwar for the J to pull them.
I am looking for the red commmodore vanderbuilt for the coaches. No, I have a set of williams Luzury Lines N&W streamliners given to me by my grandfathers friend. So, I have the cars for the prewar set.
A Railking, Willams, or Lionel “O” gauge J (not scale version) would look right with those cars since they are shorter than scale length cars. The red comet cars are a good find. Enjoy them.
The PS-2 Premier (Scale) version of the J is hitting the stores, even as I am typing this. There will be two road numbers (608 and 611) I believe. I seem to recall that there will be differences in the pilot wheels-spoked or smooth-on the two locomotives as the prototypes were different.
