I really like the Hampton Roads Transit chief’s comment about alternatives to the single-occupant automobile. Looks like folks in Tidewater are voting with their feet. This is a story that can be repeated elsewhere, too.
“in all, nearly 70,000 people can ride for free while HRT collects more than $700,000 a year.” Wow, where do I sign up for one of those $10 annual passes? Mr. Scott sounds like a recently converted NIMBY. Sadly, too many NIMBYs nationwide still can’t see the future benefits of today’s projects, until they can calculate their own savings in transit fares vs filling their tanks at $4.00 per gallon.
The car lovers said it won’t work. We told you so!
I’d like to know why the city or whomever cut NS such a sweet deal. NS should hang their heads in shame.
Here’s hoping they can get extensions underway ASAP. Had Virginia Beach not backed out of the original plans, I’m sure that line would be that much better than it already is.
Probably these statistics won’t matter to the Tea Party. But, somehow, they would just as soon fund more over-crowded highways!
Want to do some serious relief for traffic in the hampton Roads area? I think it’s hgih time to build a rail tunnel between Newport news and Norfolk. Amtrak, CSX, NS, and local commuter rail could benefit greatly. Never mind building a toll tunnel. Who wants to pay more to drive? Toll roads/HOT lanes are a failure.
2 questions here: how many of those daily riders pay ‘retail’ fare? (not riding on a pass). were they really projecting 20 years to reach the 7200 riders level? that strikes me as a wasteful and unnecessary service. but I am very happy at their success. hopefully virginia beach will build on to it also.
