Norfolk Southern closing Roanoke hump yard

One has to wonder whats next on the Roanoke chopping block? This comes after NS killed all passenger train infrastructure behind the old N&W passenger station in November 2012.

Are the employees getting reassigned ?

This is sad as it affects peoples lives, and it sad for the tradition of Roanoke as a major rail hub. But as we know things change, so go see things while you can. I hope all affected find jobs and can things can get back to normal for them soon.

WHAT!!!

WHAT!!!

WHAT!!!

Hump Yards are dying. The 40 Ft boxcar is gone. Intermodal provides better service, at a more reasonable rate, more reliable transportaiton cycle with less damage. Grain, aggregates move in “Unit Train Service” . Now even perishable products are moving in “Unit Trains”.
