I was sitting in the truck at a grade crossing, watching a very long train go by today. All of a sudden, right about 3/4 way through the train there’s a kinda shiny NS locomotive and then more cars. I got a very quick glimpse and could have sworn that it said ES 8- something. I know for sure the first letters were ES. Trying to read it I didn’t look in time to see the body characteristics of the engine. What would the ES stand for?
What you saw was a General Electric ES40DC, numbered in either the 7500 or 7600 series. ES stands for “Evolution Series”, the marketing name for GE’s current line of North American locomotives. The NS ES40DC’s are the successor to their Dash9-40CW’s but have a 12-cylinder engine and enhanced cooling systems to achieve better fuel economy, lower maintenance costs and lower exhaust emissions.
Yep, that was it! I wish I’d gotten the number but it caught me so off guard it was gone around the corner before I knew it. No wonder it was so new and shiny looking, I see from your link that the last one, that you can check, was built in June 2007. I thought from the quick look I had that it was a D8-40c
