In the August 1988 issue of Trains Magazine, there’s a news photo of a hopper car in Norfolk Southern colors and is captioned “what do you know, a Norfolk Southern freight car!”. It further states that this paint scheme is a trial.
Did they just continue painting them in N&W and Southern schemes? This trial car is painted like this model minus the NS reporting marks since the trial carries NW.
