Where are there good places to watch for trains in Lafayette,Indiana? We noticed that NS is big there and can been seen near Rte 26 and Reihle Plaza.
Try standing on the pedestrian bridge (old Main Street) to get views of N&S freights coming around curve south of Amtrak station. Also good for views to the north for long stretches.
Also turn off US 52 (Sagamore Parkway North) on exit ramp north of intersection with US 25 (around the curve northward and somewhat down hill). Find a safe place to park. You can observe N&S freights crossing the US 52 bridge.
Maybe also go up into the old Monon neighborhood and look for old streets that come fairly close to the right of way of N&S. You can observe N&S freights crossing the same bridge but you will be at a higher elevation and can see much of a freight along the exposed right of way and embankment leading the bridge over U.S. 52.
I used to attend Purdue University, so I know a couple good spots around there:
Lafayette Jct.:
Go south on Wabash Ave. from the Amtrak depot through 2 stop lights. You’ll duck under the CSX/NS mainline, then approach a four way stop. Turn left (east) at the stop sign to the dead end, and park along the street. The pedestrian bridge goes over Lafayette Jct., where the NS main splits to head off to Frankfort & Decatur, and where the KB&S main comes into CSX & NS.
NOTE: For pictures, you’ll need a step ladder, as the bridge has fencing along both sides.
CSX Monon River Bridge
Head north along Canal St., alongside CSX’s Lafayette Yard. You’ll go under US52, and past a spot called Duncan Meter, which is the north end of CSX’s yard. Go north a couple of miles. On the left side of the road, you’ll see a sign for a nature area & a dirt road. Take that, and follow it back underneath Canal St. It will take you back to the Wabash River Bridge, with the Monon logo still showing through. Good for evening shots of the occasional southbound
