NS had SD 9’s? Were these high hoods? Where were they used by NS, if at all. I’d like to see pictures of one of those in NS livery!

Saw this fleet come through the New Haven, IN yard last week. Didn’t think much of it until I noticed the 945 slug; didn’t realize they were ‘trade-ins’.

Mr Jones, go to www.railpictures.net, use the search feature, I found 15 NS SD9 photos, and 5 Sou Rwy photos.

Thank you, WILLIAM L DELMAR! That site is fantastic! I had no idea there was a search function like that, I feel like a kid in a candy store.

I have a “noob” question: in that consist, would all of the engines be under power, or just the first few, or lower output from ones in the middle, or idling, or simply freewheeling? As you can tell, I don’t know what is the most likely occurrence; however, if I had to make an abstract guess, I would guess the first two and the last one being powered, and the rest in neutral.

I suspect that Tony Kimmel’s photo was taken at East Conemaugh, not Altoona.

NS had 1 or 2 SD9’s in the yard in Sheffield, AL. I got shots only twice but the lighting was bad.

Mr. Hurt,

Regardless of quality I’d still appreciate seeing your pics. Have you posted them on flickr or similar?

BTW are they high hood on the short end? Personally I’ve never seen an SD 9 short hood model.

If I remember correctly, the SD-9s listed never had the hoods cut down.

NS inherited NKP SD9’s in 1964, used them in hump yard service and reportedly reengined them 20 years ago with EMD 645’s. They also recieved NS Corp paint. I thought they were all off the roster by 2007… but they must have still been on the property. I do wish Trains would post a photo of this.

Jason: all the units mentioned are probably dead and drained of all fluids, and will be dead in tow. Most likely, a pair of engines out of the general freight pool will pull them. The move has already occurred, perhaps someone will update with details of how they did it.
