Norfolk Southern notes 100th anniversary of N&W Ohio River Bridge

The area around Kenova as well as the Ohio side of the bridge was a favorite place of mine to photograph trains during the mid to late 1960s while attending Marshall University. Besides action on the N&W there was some as well on the C&O mainline which ran underneath the first approach span on the West Virginia side. Also the passenger station, and the platform that attached to the approach spans, made it a safe place to photograph trains on the N&W and the C&O below. Sadly both the station and platform are gone but I do still have my photos.

Tim Hensley recalled the 500 car coal that passed through Kenova in Nov, 1967. I was fortunate to be there and see it. I had planned to photograph the train but it was behind schedule because of an air hose break somewhere between Williamson and Kenova. By the time it reached Kenova it was dark.

The bridge gained some national fame a few years ago as it appeared in a background scene in the 2006 movie “We Are Marshall”.
