Norfolk Southern & Regionals

Does NS own any stake in any regional or shortline railroads (aside from the new Pan Am Southern)? I know that CSX bought large shares of INRD and PAL when they became profitable. Just wondered if NS was doing the same?

They did own a stake in Algiers , Winslow & Western before they shut down , but I believe that NS still controls the tracks as they parallel to their main east of Oakland City , IN .

Georgia Southern and Florida Railway ?

Also, don’t they have part ownership of various terminal rr’s?

The GS&F was already operated as part of the Southern prior to the N&W/SOU merger.

Perhaps the Chesapeake Western, a shortline in Virginia that the N&W bought in 1954 or thereabouts, would qualify. The N&W owned the Norfolk, Franklin, and Danville, which they bought as the Atlantic and Danville, but I think its remnants are operated as part of NS today.

Yes, they do own portions of, I believe, the Indiana Harbor Belt. Also, there’s their interest with CSX in the remaining portions of Conrail in Michigan and New Jersey joint operations.

While it’s neither a regional or a shortline, the NS has 1/3 ownership of the KCS Meridan Speedway between Shreveport, LA and Meridian, MS. KCS retained 2/3 ownership and is the operator of this line which is part of the bridge route between the NS at Meridian and the BNSF at Alliance (Dallas), TX and hosts a number of transcon intermodal trains. Whithout looking it up to get the date, this buy-in by the NS took place about three years ago.

As I remember it, NS had intended to spin off much of its remaining Michigan trackage to Watco (and give it the Michigan Central name), but it was going to retain some interest in the line. This proposal didn’t get past the STB. There’s a new one out there for the line from Grand Rapids to Elkhart only (also to be run by Watco), but I didn’t hear whether NS was retaining any control in this case.

True, yet my sources still identify GS&F as a wholly owned AND seperately operated subsidiary…so me thinks it still technically qualifies as an answer to the original question

The old AWW railroad is owned by NS and has been for several years now. along with the old yankee town railroad.
